European social survey, round 2 - monitoring attitude change in europe

Objective

The first round of the European Social Survey (ESS), the forerunner of this proposal, was funded under the 2nd Call of Framework 5, and co-funded by the European Science Foundation and 20 national academic funding agencies. The culmination of five years of background work, the project is designed to create a new, academically-driven, uniquely rigorous time series which will document and help explain hitherto inadequately-charted trends in European attitudes and underlying values. Thanks to this investment from national and international sources, the project has quickly established a remarkable momentum and a European-wide infrastructure. It now seeks to consolidate and sustain this infrastructure in a planned second round two years after the first. As a demonstrable practical forerunner of the European Research Area at work, the project will provide an invaluable substantive and methodological input into European governance.
