Objective
There is an urgent need to gather , structure and strengthen our knowledge about the relations between Europe and the Mediterranean in its full complexity shaped by conflict and cooperation. In order to face that need we propose to create a thematic network linking different European social science research centres focusing on the Mediterranean area. Based on a survey of the "state of the art " we propose to assess and improve existing research perspectives, to define a common knowledge base on topics of relevance to the Euro-Mediterranean area, and their implications for EU policies in this region. The programme addresses geopolitical dimensions and issues raised globalisation. In both respects the assumption is that the Mediterranean provides an adequate level of analysis for global developments.
