The informal economy in the eu accession countries: size, scope, trends and challenge to the process of eu enlargement

Objective

The project includes the organization of a round table in Sofia in 2002. It will bring together academics and experts from governments, NGOs and private business both from EU member states and accession countries to consider the nature of the phenomenon and its domestic and cross-border implications. The speakers will present studies of the informal sector based on one or more of the existing approaches for measurement ; they will come up with conclusions about the pros and cons of the different assessment methods. The likely impact of the EU enlargement for the informal sector in Europe will be analysed; future research agenda and policy recommendations with regard to monitoring the informal economy will be outlined. On the basis of the results of the round table future research and dissemination projects of a larger scale will be initiated, including the launcher a network for future monitoring and analysis of the informal economy in Europe.
