Study and conference on improving public access to science through science shops.

Objetivo

An international conference on improving public access to science shops will be organised.
As preparation, seven working groups will prepare draft reports on specific issues related to science shops. Science shops are currently not very well documented. This system of (mostly university based) non-profit consultancy centres arose in The Netherlands in the 1970s, and spread to some of the northern EU states and other countries. They are quite successful in giving public access to science. The proceedings of this conference will serve as a means to science and technology policy makers on the European and member state level to assess if and how science shops could be an effective tool for improving public access to science, and if so, how they can be supported. The proceedings will be of relevance to existing science shops and new initiatives; they can directly benefit form experience contained in the volume. Next to its intrinsic value, the conference and its proceedings will also be an indispensable milestone in laying the foundation for a European network of science shops. This will make science shops more efficacious and will help them advance public access to science throughout Europe.
