Objective The proposed work aims at developing a concordance between technology classifications and industrial sectors by linking Isle sectors, revision 3, to IPC subclass codes. For this purpose, an intellectual association of sector and technology codes will establish an ideal concordance. Then, an empirical concordance will be determined by relating the ISIC codes of about 3000 major applicants at the European Patent Offices and the IPC codes of their applications. In a last step, the validity of the concordance will be verified by checking the correlation of patent and foreign trade statistics. For EU member countries, Candidate countries, Japan and the United States, recent patent data will be computed broken down by industrial sectors.
