AUTOMATICAL OPERATING BULB TURBINES WITH SHAFT SEALING OF SPECIAL NEW DESIGN AND ELECTRONIC-HYDRAULIC GOVERNOR

Objective

Reconstruction of a low head run-of-river SHP at the river Zschopau (former GDR) using a Kaplan tube turbine with innovative components. Project is concepted as dissemination of project HY./01002/91/DE which has been successfully completed. Produced energy will be used mainly for self consumption; the surplus is fed into the public grid.
The objectives of the project in respect of the main innovative aspects were fully met. Economic viability is given by the actual energy production which was found in the range of the estimated corresponding value mentioned in the original contract documents.
Proposed Kaplan tube turbine is equipped with new developed and designed type of turbine shaft sealing.
Technical data of turbine :
Number/type : 1 Kaplan axial flow tube turbine
Net head : 2,90 m
Design flow : 12,0 m3/s
Max. output : 312 kW
Expected annual energy production : 1,6 GWh.
Furthermore the selected technique is foreseen for modern automatic operation including trash rack cleaning, and electronic water level control in combination with an inflatable weir.
