HIGH HEAD HYDRO INSTALLATION WITH EQUIPMENT FOR UNMANNED OPERATION AND A NOVEL FISH DIVERTER SYSTEM

Objetivo

To demonstrate optimized and safe operation of an unmanned hydro scheme using two equally sized Pelton turbines. Expected annual energy output: 12.265 GWh. Innovation is claimed for the use of an electric fish diverter system instead of a screen at the intake, a single optic fibre for transmission of signals from the forebay to the powerhouse, comparison of the behaviour of ceramic coatings in the needle valve versus conventional stainless steel and the application of an "on-line condition" monitoring system (protection device).
The estimated payback is 6 years.

The project will demonstrate a number of technical innovations which will combine to improve unmanned operation of hydroelectric installations. A solar photovoltaic powered, electric fish diverter will replace the traditional fish grid. A ceramic coated turbine nozzle will be compared with the conventional stainless steel coating. On-line conditions monitoring will be used to adjust turbine flow in response to abnormal situations.
Net head 178 m
Rated flow 1.5 m3/s
Output power 2092 kW
An additional novel feature will be the use of a fibre optic cable to transmit cables from the forebay to the powerhouse.
