HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT WITH INTAKE STRUCTURE,STORAGE RESERVOIR AND PENSTOCK ON THE RIO CAVO AT PENNABILLI

Objective

The aim of the project is to install a new hydroelectric plant of the capacity of 540 kWe on the Rio Cavo at Pennabilli in central Italy. The plant is composed by diversion weir, storage reservoir, penstock and a Pelton turbine, manufactured by the first proposer. The electricity produced will be sold totally to the national grid.

1. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY :
The innovative apsect of the project is that the turbine is self-produced by the project proposer, thereby creating the producer/investor innovative figure and a low cost, reliable project typology. The works will be executed in local materials and the constructions will be well integrated in the natural landscape, thus creating a minimum impact on the environment and raising public acceptability.
2. CONTEXT :
The plant will be located in Pennabilli in a mountainous area where the depopulation index is high. Thence the desire to create an innovative investment, bringing income in the area, in respect of the natural environment and creating new business opportunity for the production and diffusion of new small hydro plants in similar mountainous areas. The plant will benefit from the incentivating price of selling electricity to ENEL according to Law 9/90 and 10/90. Another important aspect is that in summer during the periods of non-production of electricity the basin will be used for leisure activities (fishing competitions, visits, etc.) and at the same time during the year the penstock pressure will be utilised to irrigate a poplar plantation.
3. ECONOMIC ASPECTS :
The double-rotor, Pelton turbine, related to the fall and to a maximum discharge will develop a power of 540 kW. Such a power is necessary because the Rio Cavo, as a typical mountain river, alternate periods of high flow with periods of low flow. The hydro-plant will be fed by a storage reservoir which will produce a constant voltage power of around 540 kW. the numbers of production hours will, instead vary. During the peak flow periods they will be 15 hours a day to be extended also to the night hours. During the low flow periods production will be reduced at 12 hours day, arriving a alternate-day production.
4. MONITORING :
The monitoring will be carried out for a period of one year in order to take all the insights relative to the different seasonal conditions.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
