Objective
The aim of the project is to demonstrate the implementation of an innovative run-of-river hydro concept integrated in a gate of the existing weir Birkelfeld at the river Rems. The proposed technical solution allows the exploitation of a hydro potential, no tapped so far by means of a first application of a compact "gate-hooked turbine-generator set" in modular technique. The power facility itself consists of four small single regulated runner-generator arrangements whereas the turbine runners are coupled via belts to the generators.
- Optimized annual energy production 720.581 kWh and substitution of 370 tROE/a with environmentally friendly energy production.
- Environmentally friendly integration of plant into existing situation. Minimum costs by no need for powerhouse, ground, construction work,etc.
- Noise reduced operation by belt driven systems.
- Ensured dissemination and marketing of proposed technique.
Technical data :
HN = 2.82m
QA = 6 m³/s
PMAX = 140 kW
annual energy output EA =720.581 kWh.
- first application of such a modular "gate hooked" turbine concept without the need of ground and construction work.
- turbine concept which allows fine tuning of water level and flow, whilst optimizing energy output.
- specially developed hydraulic design of the modular components.
- Lubrication of all parts of the power set by rubber bearings and water.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
