INFLATABLE WEIR AT THIERBACH

Objective

The capacity of a large inflatable weir is to be proven through its construction.
The filling medium water is to be replaced by air during periods of low temperature so as to improve the use of inflatable weirs in colder climates. The test phase should provide information on this technology.
The system was officially commissioned on November 22nd, 1994. The Thierbach hydrostation, which was closed down during the second construction phase, has been in operation since this date.
1. Measured data for inflatable weir :
- weir width 2 x 23.20 m (as planned)
- weir height planned 2.01 m
actual 2.12 m when filled with water
- possible overdammed backwater approx. 0.1m

2. Previous annual power generation (with old weir) : 1750 MWh
3. Turbine output with overdammed backwater of top water (H=3.10 m)
P1=248 kW
P2=280 kW
Thus the annual power generation is increased.
operating problems are also avoided thanks to the automatic regulation of the top water level :
- removal of flotsam and jetsam during flooding
- removal of ice
- reduction of foliage waste in Autumn
The overall increase in the annual power generation can only be estimated at present at around : 1900 MWh
The increased generation can only be assessed and amortisation period calculated on completion of the measurement phase.
A new weir is to be built for the Thierbach hydroelectric power station in the Zwickauer Mulde. This will be an inflatable weir, H = 2.0 m and W = 2 x 24 m.
The weir will automatically regulate the water level in the Zwickauer Mulde and will be completely flattened during flood.
The filling medium is normally water. The height of the inflatable weir is controlled by a regulating system developed by Floecksmuehle.
This regulating system has been extended to include an air control: at low temperatures the water in the envelope is replaced by air. The regulating system remains in fully automatic operation.
