Objective
The construction of a water intake on a mountain stream to provide a run-of-river supply for a small hydroelectric generating unit and the restoration of the irrigation network for local agricultural land. The annual energy production is about 4,765,000 kWh and the estimated unit cost of the electricity produced about 0. 33 FF/kWh.
The unit was commissioned in January 1987 and has operated commercially since then, with full production achieved in April. However an abnormally dry summer reduced the output over that period. The project costs were higher than expected due to two factors; the remoteness of the site; and alternations to the original plan made during the construction and installation stage. The major technical problems encountered were the installation of the pressure conduit and the strength of the surge tank.
This project was enabled by the rebuilding of a weir on the Zoicu Stream which restored the irrigation of the agricultural land upstream of the village of Soccia. The weir allowed exploitation of a head of water fed by a 1200 m long steel supply pipe to a 750 kW hydroelectric generating unit. In addition, the junction with the irrigation network was reinforced using 700 m of pressure conduit.
The hydroelectric plant data is as follows :
Net head : 233 m
Flow : 0. 4 m3/s
Turbine type : Pelton, vertical shaft
Turbine speed : 1000 rev/min
Generator type : asynchronous
Generator voltage : 5500 V, 3 phase, 50 Hz.
The electricity produced by the generating unit is sold to EDF and is connected to the grid at 20 kV.
