Objective
To demonstrate the use of a modular turbine building construction using the pneumatical caisson method to reduce construction costs in low head schemes, and the economic exploitation of a low head on the river "Maas".
The demonstration period was completed in March 1991 with the following energy production figures: Up to December 1990, a total of 42,214 MWh generated with an average of 26,048 MWh/annum for four units in operation.
For the first quarter of 1991, 18,000 MWh generated suggesting that the predicted 52,000 MWh/annum is achievable.
The energy generated is fed to the national grid network.
A very low head hydro power plant has been built alongside an existing weir on the river Maas. To reduce costs, a modular approach was adopted for the four turbines.
The turbine building was constructed above ground, and then sunk using the pneumatical Caisson method. A closed box-shaped concrete construction was built at field level, then the soil beneath was mined away, allowing the caisson to sink to the required level. After the sinking, the in- and outlet canals were made and the turbines installed, resulting in a compact and easily replicable design.
A specially designed fish pass also forms part of the project.
