Objective
The aim of this project is the planning and construction of a run-of-river hydropower plant to harness the hydro potential at an existing weir of the Spree River in Cottbus/Brandenburg. In order to improve the local electricity supply situation and to reduce the air pollution, it is intented to feed the produced electricity into the public grid.
The innovation of the hydropower plant consists of the noise reduced gear box, the new lubrication and cooling system in a closed circuit and the special designed guidevanes of the Kaplan tube turbine. By these technical improvements an increased operating safety and low maintenance and a long life duration can be realized. The innovative components of the hydropower plant fulfil the demands.
Since the power plant started the normal operation it has a high reliability of 98%. The turbine's maximum continuous output is 290 kW. According to the manufacturer the maximum power is 280 kW. During the monitoring phase of 12 months the hydropower plant could yield an energy production of only 1,314 MWH compared to a possible 2000 MWH/Y which has been designed for the power plant. Reason for the relatively low production rate is the limited available water discharge of the River Spree in 1997 and the not optimized procedure during the first operational period. The designed production of about 2000 MWH/Y could be reached by an average yearly discharge of 11.0 m³/s.
Through the construction and electromechanical works could be executed as designed unfortunately some severe events lenghtened the time for construction. Due to the bad soil conditions additional grouting works had to be carried out. This plus the repair measures as a consequence of the above mentionned accident, standstill due to bad weather conditions and administrative demands delayed the completion of the plant of about 30 months and increase the intended costs by 36%.
The new hydropower plant will be built at the left pillar of the existing weir of the River Spree. The head of the weir is 2.5 m. The plant is equipped with an automatic and innovative Kaplan tube turbine. The turbine has an installed capacity of 280 kWel and the annual energy production is 2,287 MWh/y. The turbine has an efficiency of 88 per cent for the designed discharge of 15 m3/s. The maximum of turbine efficiency of 91.5 per cent will be reached for a discharge of 10.5 m3/s. By using a new developed noise reduced gear box, a new lubrication and cooling system in a closed circuit and special designed guide vanes the Kaplan tube turbine has a long life duration, an increased operating safety and low maintenance.
The following phases are planned for the realisation of the hydropower plant :
Phase 1 : Detailed engineering and elaboration of the tender documents.
Phase 2 : Construction of the plant and the turbine
Phase 3 : Installation and testruns of the turbine
Phase 4 : Monitoring phase.
