Peticide effects on humans

Objetivo

Foreseen Results

The project will focus in the evaluation of the effects of pesticides in human populations under types and degrees of exposure commonly occurring in actual practice of pesticide application in several European countries. Cytogenetic damage, specific DNA damage, repair and screening urine samples for detection of genotoxis agents will be undertaken. Effects of specific pesticides on people accidentally exposed to large amounts will be studied. Finally, the possible role of nutritional habit differences in the participating countries in the amount and type of damage will be investigated.
The proposed research project is directed to investigate the effects of pesticides on humans under conditions of actual use.

The widespread use of pesticides has deleterious effects on the environment and human health, especially since pesticides are mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic. However, it is important to consider the rests and benefits involved in the use of pesticides.

The in vitro and in vivo cytogenetic effects of the pesticides have been established. However investigations about people occupationally exposed are less frequent. In some of these human monitoring studies the results were positive in the induction of chromosomal aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges.
