Objective
The broad objective of the research programme is the definition of an integrated intervention strategy for the sustainable development, in the Andean Region, of the production chain related to fibres and meats of Domesticated South-American Camelids (DSC) - Alpaca and Llama. Specific objectives are:
* To identify regional policies of sustainable development connected to the productive use of DSC.
* To define an institutional and social approach to ecosystem management in the areas of DSC production.
* To identify resources management methods and operative tools aimed at strengthening the potential of the DSC production chain, from the pastures and DSC stock-breeding to the manufacturing and trade of fibres and meats.
* To integrate the RTD activities with the development programmes ongoing in the Andean region.
Expected Outcome
The work carried out should provide guidance for the management of all natural, technological and human resources involved in the development of DSC fibre and meat productions. It is direct towards the support ecosystems characterized by the existence of a very low income social groups, having poor economic growth expectations, and by environments whose climatological, ecological and productive features are fragile and threatened of irreversible deterioration.
The key activities envisaged are:
* Providing an information framework to support the development of policies of sustainable management of natural resources in the Andean region. The work shall be carried out for selected DSC's production areas, representative of most important ecosystems of the Andean altiplano. To this aim: a) a basic information structure for the analysis of the interrelations between ecosystems and economic activities, to be used as an ecosystem management tool, will be developed; b) an analysis and appraisal of the environmental impact of the DSC production chain in relation to specific and critical aspects/problems of ecosystems management shall be performed.
* Understanding the relationships between socio-economic and policy factors affecting the agro-industrial activities and the management of natural resources in the of the Andean region and outlining policy recommendations for the improvement and growth of the sector that would be compatible with local socio-economic and environmental conditions. To this aim a methodology for the analysis of socio-economic factors in the sustainable development of the DSC production chain shall be set up. The methodology shall be enriched or illustrated by applicative solutions on specific aspects/problems.
* Improving the effectiveness of the DSC production chain without producing negative effects on the environment. The work shall be carried out in the field in selected areas of the Andean altiplano and in experimental settings. To this aim: a) methods of sustainable management of stock-breeding shall be developed; b) actions to improve the production of quality DSC fibre and meat shall be devised; c) methods and systems of quality control of DSC fibre and meat shall be studied.
