Objective
The main objectives are as follows:
* To assess the ecological changes in the Lower Senegal River Basin and related aquatic weed problems as a result of the construction of the Diama dam near the outflow of the river, with emphasis on the Lac de Guiers.
* To study and assess the effect of the weevil Neohydronomus affinis on Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) in the Lac de Guiers and the Djoudj National Park.
* To study and assess the effect of mechanical control of aquatic weeds (mainly Typha australis) in the Lac de Guiers and the Djoudj National Park.
* To come to an effective integrated control programme of aquatic weeds in the Lower Senegal River Basin by using biological means of control (N. affinis against P. stratiotes) as well as mechanical means of control (mowing boat for removing emergent weeds).
Expected Outcome
An ecologically sound, effective integrated control method for aquatic weeds in the Lower Senegal River Basin in Senegal and Mauritania, as well as detailed knowledge of the development of aquatic vegetation in the Lac de Guiers.
The key activities envisaged are:
* Estimation of areas in the Lac de Guiers covered by aquatic vegetation (including species composition) during three years via satellite images, modern GIS methods including colour photo CD's combined to a MapInfo programme and estimations in the field using GPS.
* To study physical/chemical characteristics of the water, such as pH, redox-status, conductivity, secchi depth and bottom quality.
* Rearing and subsequent release of the weevil N. affinis in the Djoudj National Park and the Lac de Guiers, as well as monitoring the impact of the weevil on the development of Pistia.
* Assessing the effect of a mowing boat on emergent aquatic weeds, in particular T. australis. This will imply mowing at different depths and a study on regrowth.
* Two training courses for Senegalese and Mauritanian researchers. The first course, which is held in Senegal, will include a comprehensive introduction to mapping procedures in connection with aquatic vegetation. The second course, which will be held at the University of Vienna in Austria, will include an introduction to hard and software components in connection with GIS information systems.
