Wake vortex evolution in far-wake region & wake vortex encounter

Objective

The potential safety problems associated with aircraft flying in the wake of other aircraft have long been recognized and strict separation rules, based on the weights of the following aircraft, have been devised. The increased air-traffic density near airports and the possible introduction of new very large aircraft like the A3XX, necessitate a reconsideration of the present rules. The present proposal adresses the wake vortex evolution and wake vortex encounter problem with a programme of experimental and computational research. The short term goal of the project is to create wake vortex encounter flight-simulation capabilitites that may assist in defining save aircraft separation rules for the A3XX project. The results from the present study will also contribute to establish future safely mitigated aircraft separation rules near airports.
