SAR imaging for boreal ecology and radar interferometry applications

Objetivo

SIBERIA is a shared-cost action (SCA) proposal for Area 3.3 of the Environmentand Climate programme. SIBERIA aims to produce an extensive forest map of a geographical region for which only limited information is of immense scientific, environmental, and commercial interest both to specific customers and to the general population. Russia's vast forests are a natural resource of global importance, both economically and ecologically. They already serve Russia and the world as a source of wood, a symbol of wilderness, and a critical stabilizer of-the-art satellite data and remote sensing techniques. These include dual-frequency spaceborne radar instruments and SAR interferometry, which, although relatively recent in development, have shown huge potential for the mapping and monitoring of the Earth's surface, especially in regions where cloud cover is persistent. Forest maps covering Russia are today only available at a scale of 1: 2,5 Mio, with the latest issue from 1990. Until now, remote sensing data have not been used because of its minimal availability: high cloud coverage in optical data and no ERS data due to missing receiving station. Thanks to a recent international effort, dual-frequency (JERS and ERS coverage in the same time frame) plus ERS-Tandem images from Siberia have been systematically acquired since August 1997. This represents the largest continuous area ever covered by three radar satellites in concert and has been facilitated by the deployment of a mobile receiving station in Mongolia to close the ERS acquisition gap. SIBERIA merges the advantages of operational SAR-satellites by analysing dual-frequency composites and interferometric products. SIBERIA will demonstrate the feasibility of radar remote sensing technology for large-scale vegetation mapping and will combine and refine state-of-the-art technology and techniques. Where interferometric coherence allows, high quality digital elevation models will be generated.

A classification methodology will be developed in two phases: 1) analysis and validation of methodology in selected satellite frames within test sites with excellent ground truth, and -after synthesis of developed procedures- 2) extension of methodological application to mapping area of 1600 km x 1300 km. The acquired radar images will establish an initial data set to enable research about the dynamics of boreal ecosystems. Long-term monitoring (eg. with ENVISAT) may be accomplished in the future through the deployment of a permanent Russian receiving station. The participating and associated customers, who until now have not used remote sensing as an environmental tool, will gain an understanding of the technology and specific training in radar remote sensing techniques.
