Objective
Mycohacterial diseases, mainly tuberculosis and paratuberculosis (Johne'sdisease) are not only a threat to Public Health, but also the cause of massive financial losses due to condemnations and drop of the productions. Today, tuberculosis and Johne's disease can be a barrier to trade. The present concerted action is based on the will of the partners to share their technology and expertise in order to obtain a common knowledge on mycobacterial diseases that would help to eradicate tuberculosis and paratuberculosis from the countries of the European Union.
Our objectives are:
1. To coordinate the information about the problems encountered in the course of the ongoing eradication programs;
2. Clarify existing or potential reservoirs of mycobacterial diseases among farm and wild animals, and how infection spread between them;
3. Eradication of the diseases in existing reservoirs, as they represent a potential menace for Public Health;
4. To exchange between partner practical knowledge of tuberculosis and paratuberculosis outbreaks, and how is depending on farming and trade practices;
5. To perform epidemiological investigations and tracing of such outbreaks across no longer existing borders;
6. Clarify quality of available data, and develop standardised collection of epidemiological data in cooperation with the Zoonosis Centers;
7. Set up a databank on strain typing that will be maintained in each laboratory and that will he available for all scientific community;
8. Collection of a representative number of data and strains that will he accessible to others partners for future cooperation research. The exchanges will follow strict guidelines;
9. Exchange of expertise and scientific information, to avoid duplication of research and the un useful competition between groups or programmes;
10.To define real needs for future research and to coordinate new projects: immunology and development of vaccines, new tests for diagnosis, drug-susceptibility testing.
The cooperation between partners will be organized through a 36-months formal network, which will remain open to new participants. General meetings will heorganized for a complete coordination, and workshops will be dedicated to the standardisation and spread of techniques. The objectives will be achieved with the creation of a bank of samples, and the exchange of techniques, reagents and expertise.
The main tasks to be discussed will be: (1) diagnosis of tuberculosis and paratuberculosis based on the immunological status, (2) laboratory diagnosis of mycobacterial infections, (3) molecular typing of Mycobacterium isolates, (4) reservorns, (5~) Public Health implications ofmycobacterial infections and (6) new trends in mycobacterial research.
