Assessment and monitoring of desertication processes in mongolia using remote sensing methods and geographic information system

Objective

The main type of desertification in Mongolia is degradation of vegetation cover. The aim of the proposed research is to assess the dynamics of vegetation degradation in Mongolia, and to establish a monitoring system to control desertification. The field observations and experiments will be carried out in order to study changes of soil-plant communities and examine methods of pastures rehabilitation. Specific spectral indicators of land degradation processes will be developed. Detailed remote sensing monitoring of selected areas will be carried out using Land sat data; for long term, large scale study of land cover dynamics NOAA AVHRR data will be used; GIS-based desertification monitoring system will be established; recommendations on rehabilitation will be elaborated.
