Epidemiological study of the dramatic fall in life expectancy in russia in the 1990s

Objective

Worldwide one of the greatest changes in adult mortality in the past decade has-been the rapid increasing mortality in Russia and in some neighbouring countries. The objective of the proposed study is to retrospectively investigate the causes of this dramatic trend. The study will identify 100,000 deaths that have occurred in the 1990s in 4 cities of Russia. Copies of the death certificates of all subjects will be obtained from regional death certification offices. The household where the dead subject lived will be approached and a proxy interview from family member (spouse, sibling or other) on lifestyle and socio-economic variables obtained. Subsequently, a proportional mortality analysis will be conducted to estimate the percentage of deaths in Russia over the past 10 years attributable teach particular cause, and in particular to excessive alcohol and tobacco consumption.
