Strengthening healthcare epidemiology and investigation of nosocomial infections in the mediterranean area.

Objective

In a context of rapid changes in life style, health and health-related technologies, the Mediterranean countries face the growing challenge of nosocomial infections. Healthcare epidemiology provides essential methods for their control. The NosoMed project will promote the practice of surveillance by the creation and validation of a cost-effective package of relevant methodological tools, by applying it to the risk of HCV contamination (in renal dialysis and cardiac surgery) and by setting up a network of trained healthcare epidemiologists. The project will lead to the preparation and dissemination of validated recommendations for
(a) the surveillance of nosocomial infections in general,
(b)the control of HCV infections in renal dialysis centres and
(c) in cardio-thoracic surgery.
It will prepare a network of hospitals in field evaluation of future preventive biotechnologies.
