Sustainable livelihoods in southeast asia: a grassroots-informed approach to food security

Objective

The project aims to enhance food security for marginalised rural, urban and peri - urban groups in SE Asia by incorporating popular coping strategies, identified through in-depth grassroots research and macro-micro policy analysis. The project is congruent with recent theoretical and practical challenges to the top-down development orthodoxy, and is compatible with the UNDPTMs Sustainable Livelihoods approach. The project will explore, identify, fine-tune and integrate into future policy initiatives popular strategies for coping with food insecurity/insufficiency in Thailand, Vietnam and the Lao PDR. The Asian economic crisis, global and regional integration, and post-socialist economic reform provide a back-drop to important elements of the research. The project is designed to enhance institutional development and capacity-building in SE Asia by strengthening Europe-Asia policy dialogue, and by disseminating and informing.
