Mycorrhiza technology for staple food crop production in small- scale sustainable agriculture in china

Objective

Arbuscular mycorrhiza technology will be applied as an innovative tool to enhance staple food crop productivity in small-scale Chinese farming systems, by improving soil fertility and particularly phosphate availability which is low in most agricultural soils in China. A Chinese stock centre of arbuscular mycorrhizalfungi from north, central and south China will be established and germ plasm registered in an on-line database. Isolates with high symbiotic efficiency will be propagated on a large scale as quality-controlled inoculums and directly introduced into production systems of sweet potato, maize and cassava traditionally used in small farms. Improved crop yields and persistence of introduced inoculums by molecular monitoring will be criteria of inoculation efficiency. Success of the project relies on close cooperation between European and Chinese research institutes, SMEs and end-users (farmers)
