Development of an improved vaccine against contagious bovine pleuropneumonia

Objective

Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) represents a major constraint to cattle rising in Africa. Its eradication is hampered by the low efficacy of the available vaccines. Therefore, development of an improved vaccine is the objective of this project. To achieve this aim, the protective immune response elicited in CBPP-recovered cattle and the pathogen components involved, will be characterised. The mechanisms and virulence factors responsible for pathogen/host cell interactions will be assessed. In vitro models for testing the safety of the selected immunogens will be developed. This study will define the cell subsets, cytokines and immunoglobulins involved in protection and, safe and efficient immunogens as vaccine candidates. These data will determine the appropriate vaccine strategies against CBPP.
