Objective
Recently it has been demonstrated that a Thieveries species in China causes a fatal disease in small ruminants. The economic loss due to this previously unknown parasite ( for convenience referred to as Thieveries china) is estimated to be about $24 Mill. Precise and sensitive diagnostic tools for surveillance of the disease/parasite as well as immuno prophylactic means to control/prevent spread of the disease are lacking. The proposed research aims at developing these means required for implementing effective control measures. Serological and molecular genetic diagnostic tools to enable identification of the causative agent and its clear differentiation to other proclaims infecting host and vector will be developed. In defined geographical areas exhibiting a high infection rate these tools will be evaluated. For vaccine development, the protection of cultured attenuated merozoites will be determined. Furthermore, defined merozite antigens will be screened for their property to evoke a response of T cell lines/clones from immunised animals. Identified immune-reactive antigens will be cloned, expressed and used as DNA and/or recombinant antigens in immunisation trials.
