New native fish species for asian aquaculture: conserving natural genetic reserves and increasing options for sustainable use of aquatic resources

Objective

Chinese inland fisheries and aquaculture resources are at risk due to adverse environmental changes. We combine systematic, genetics, ecology, conservation, aquaculture, and fisheries expertise to locate, diagnose, screen and test new native species for aquaculture. We also locate, profile and assess management requirements of taxa that may provide new genetic material for species already in culture, primarily cyprinids of the genera Cyprinus and Carassius. We describe in detail the geographical and environmental limits of all target taxa constitutingin-situ genetic reserves for present and potential future aquaculture species, and establish conservation criteria for sustainable exploitation. The principal objective of the study is to increase the number of native species available for aquaculture.
