Management and policy options for the sustainable development of communal rangelands and their communities in southern africa

Objective

Reconciling socio-economic needs with the biophysical sustainability of communal semi-arid rangelands requires novel management and policy options . INCO-DC ERBIC18CT970162 pioneered an integrated, multidisciplinary analysis producing new data and insights . This proposal , based on 3 southern African areas of great biological as well as social value, builds on that work. Dependent on community participation and holistic analysis, this project will critically evaluate options for improving rangeland and natural resources management, alternative and additional income sources and the impacts of current policies. The results will inform policy and management options to promote sustainable development of range communities at all levels from individual initiatives through to local, national levels and EU.
