Development of eggplant lines (solanum melongena l.) resistant to bacterial and fungal wilts

Objective

This project aims at development of eggplant lines (Solana melange L.) resistant to bacterial and fungal wilts. Genetic analysis will be performed to determine the inheritance of resistance to Ralston solanacearum and Fusariumoxysporum, identified in Chinese eggplant landraces, S. thorium and dihaploids derived from somatic hybrids of eggplant with S. aethiopicum. A simple PCR-based method for screening resistance in breeding materials will be developed through the bulked segregant analysis (BSA). RAPD and micro satellite markers linked to resistance will be identified by applying the BSA to the F2 and BC3-4 progenies of eggplant landraces, S. thorium and dihaploids. The breeding lines of eggplant obtained from sexual and somatic hybridisation will be assessed for resistance by using the markers found to assist its introgression, and evaluated for their agronomic properties in the field conditions
