Objective
The MCCSP operational research project aims to address the important public health issue of screening for cervical cancer in developing countries through the assessment of different methods for cervical cancer screening (papanicolaou (PAP) smear, visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and testing for human papilloma virus (HPV)) in field conditions as alternative screening methods for poor resource countries. The project will also evaluate the performance of the out-patient treatment methods loop electro excision procedure (LEEP) and cryotherapy in field conditions. A Community outreach approach will be used to try to enhance coverage of the at risk women for cervical pre-cancer. The research will be carried out in 5 primary health centres and one referral centre in Mombassa, Kenya.
