Objective
In West Africa, teak plantation in non-conventional areas and shortening of rotations are jeopardizing growth rate and wood quality because of lack of knowledge. Our objective is to identify and provide suitable germplasm and management rules to ensure rural and industrial plantations profitability. Much work has been done in West Africa regarding teak germplasm testing, silvicultural practices and wood properties analysis. However, multidisciplinary research is required to benefit fully from these decades of work. The development of new cost-effective assessments of stem form and wood properties will lead to accurate analysis of provenance trials and forest management experiments established in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Molecular markers studies and vegetative propagation will provide data and tools for sustainable regional development, dissemination and conservation of teak germplasm.
