Improved sustainability of agro-food chains in central America: a techno-managerial approach

Objective

The sustainability of the linkages between agro-food production in developing countries, and final consumption in developed countries has been continuously under pressure. Unequal income distribution within the commodity chain, environmental and health risks, as well as mismatches with consumers preferences have created an unstable setting. The commodities to be investigated are important for the socio-economic development of Central America and may count with considerable consumers demand in the EU. The proposal develops technology evaluation tools to make EU-CA agro-food systems more sustainable from environmental, food safety and socio-economic perspectives. The results will be useful for producers (to enhance added value, and improve living and working conditions), the EU consumer (safe and stable supply of good quality products) and the environment (less pollution, saving natural resources).
