Primary health-care in later life: improving service in Bangladesh and Vietnam

Objective

The study assesses the impact of targeted primary health care (PHC) interventions to improve the health and quality of life of older people in rural Vietnam and Bangladesh. The consortium consists of an experienced, multidisciplinary team from Sweden, the UK, Bangladesh and Vietnam. The project will assess the health needs of elderly people and the effectiveness of PHC services in meeting these needs. It will develop a sustainable intervention package to improve the delivery of a good quality health system to this vulnerable group. This package will target PHC providers, local communities, informal carers and older people themselves. The study will then assess the impact of these interventions using a range of quantitative and qualitative techniques, and will assess their applicability in other low-income settings. This will significantly increase the capacity of poorer countries to meet the health care needs of their rapidly ageing populations.
