Symposium: "challenges of tuberculosis in the new millenium"

Objective

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), 456 075 cases of tuberculosis (TB) were reported in 1997 for Latin America and the Caribbean. Countries such as Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras and Peru have incidences of more than 50/100 000 and are considered as "severe"; most other countries show an incidence of 25/100 000 or more. The XVI Latin American Congress on Microbiology will be held at the Institute of Tropical Medicine "Pedro Kourí" (IPK) from 11-15 November, 2002. In this context, we are organizing the TB Symposium with the participation of researchers from Europe and Latin America countries expecting that this meeting increase the knowledge to the participants in this field and to permit future collaboratlons on TB research between Europe and LA countries.
