Sustainable amazonia. structural change and policy options in rural and urban areas.

Objective

Against the background of changing settlement structures in Amazonia, the implementation of regional sustainable development becomes an increasing challenge for science, politics and planning. Sustainable settlement patterns, however, are an indispensable precondition for the conservation of resources and the battle against poverty in this region. This proposal will examine central aspects of rural-urban linkages and identify the respective potential they have for sustainable development. By means of discussions with regional decision-makers from politics and different stakeholders, solution strategies for the removal of structural and political barriers for the implementation of sustainable regional development are then to be developed. The interchange with scientists will serve the purpose to develop theoretical concepts explaining current socio-economic and political processes in peripheral regions.
