Objective
MULTIMEDIA BROKER aims to integrate a number of multimedia tools into an infrastructure which will support publishers with new means of developing content and products, and consumers with new facilities for using these interactive products creatively and efficiently. The project is building on a feasibility study which analyzed user needs in the areas of electronic publishing, information retrieval and dissemination and will be based on existing standards. Multimedia Broker will support the development of new applications in three distinct sectors, which represent key markets for the multimedia publishing industry : training, education and consumer products. It will also address the complementary issues of human resources and organizational structure. Open to advertisers, the proposed system will enable easier cooperation between publishers and authors and help consumers to query networked products.
The project follows a six month feasibility study into user requirements in the three main elements of multimedia publishing - electronic publishing, information retrieval and dissemination. Based on this research the consortium developed the Multimedia Broker concept. This is intended as both a suite of technical support tools and an architecture for an easily implemented multimedia publishing and access system. It is based on existing standards.
The proposed system provides an infrastructure for publishers to work more easily with their authors and to provide their consumers with the tools to query the networked products on offer. It incorporates tools for advertising agencies to supply ads electronically to the system.
