REDUCTION OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION OF A STEAM CRACKER CRACKED GAS COMPRESSOR

Objectif

The aim is to improve the polytropic efficiency of the cracked gas compressor by replacing the internal parts of the casings by complete new elements. The new internal elements, designed and manufactured according to the new THOMASSEN's technology will result in an efficiency improvement from 64% to 79%. This means a power reduction of 4094 KW which results in a lower demand for the driver of the compressor train. A reduction 20 tons/hour of high pressure steam production by the auxiliary boilers is calculated, resulting in a saving of 12400 tons/year of heavy fuel-oil. That involves a 8087000 FRF saving on combustible consumption and on cooling water consumption.
The purpose of the application of the THOMASSEN design is the objective to decrease the energy consumption of cracked gas compression per ton of ethylene by 19.7%. It is expected that indeed these savings will be met, as it is foreseen that the efficiency might raise to even above 80%.
During last period, the main COPENOR activities was the installation of the new internals and the modifications of the oil system.
INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY :
The project consists in replacing the internals (rotors and stators) of an existing compressor by others in order to obtain better efficiency.
New rotors will be studied in order to obtain a very polytropic efficiency due to THOMASSEN's new technology. The new technology will allow a compressor polytropical efficiency of 79% instead of existing 64%.
THOMASSEN's innovative technology offers superior efficiencies of compression stages, mainly for following reasons: - Non standard design, so absolute maximum flexibility of all design parameters (optimisation) of each-stage. - matching of compression stages in sections and matching of sections in the process.
- New alternative design of stationary equipment, e.g. diffusor channels with Low Solidity Diffusor rings, if required for further improvements.
- Three-Dimensional (3-D) configuration of impeller blading.
- New manufacturing technologies and combination of computerised design and computerised manufacturing methods. All these improvements have been possible by developing a computerised calculation program.
CONTEXT :
This technology is operated in the cracked gas compressor of a naphta/LPG steamcracker. This machine compresses the cracked gas from about 1.5 bar absolute to about 34 bars absolute.The compressor, of centrifugal type, includes five process stages, with refrigeration between each stage and condensate separation. The first two stages are joined together in one compressor casing, the 3rd and 4th ones in a second casing and the 5th one forms the third casing.
The three rotors are coupled and are driven by one condensation and bleed-off steam turbine. The 54 b steam feeding the turbine is obtained by expansion in a turbo-alternator of steam generated by cracking furnaces at 113 bars, a complement being furnished by auxiliary boilers.
ECONOMIC ASPECTS:
This efficiency gain will allow to reduce compressor absorbed power of about 4100 kW.
