Objective
The project aim's is to increase the hydrotreatment unit in the Belgian Refining C deg. located in Antwerp without changing the furnace and the reactor.
The 90% thermal efficiency and low pressure drop compact, plate heat-exchanger PACKINOX has be added to an existing series arrangement of 5 shell and tube heat exchangers.
In full capacity operation, it is expected to decrease the self-oil consumption of the hydrotreatment line of the BRC refinery.
The final solution was to keep the 5 existing Shell and Tubes Heat Exchangers, in the cold part, in series with the Packinox Heat Exchanger to avoid any possible ammonium salts crystallisation in the Packinox Heat Exchanger. Thermal and hydrualical performances are better than expected.
The base components of PACKINOX Heat-exchanger are : long, corrugated by explosion forming, thin, stainless-steel, TIG welded plates.
The PACKINOX heat exchanger comprise :
a pressure vessel operating up to 40 bars H2
a heat transfer bundle which is designed to optimise the thermal and hydraulic performances in the following conditions :
- Feed flow rate : 140 t/h instead of 100 t/h in the existing line.
- Hot temperature : 310 deg. C.
- Hot approach : 45 deg. C instead of 180 deg. C.
- Pressure drop 6 bar instead of 9 bar.
For security the PACKINOX heat-exchanger about 1800 m2 has been placed in series with to 5 Existing Shell & tube about 1250 m2.
Some piping modifications have been made to supply the heat of the stabilisation column from another boiler, instead of using the HDT furnace heat.
BRC had not to change the reactor. They changed the old catalyst by a more efficient new one. They replaced the compressor by another existing one in the refinery. The furnace has not beenchanged. The bottle neck was located on the combined feed heat exchanger.
The demonstration will consist to test the PACKINOX heat exchanger on the 2 following aspects :
- economical viability for the thermal and hydraulic performances.
- Technical risk : fouling and corrosion resistance.
