FIRST INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION OF A PRESSURISED FLUID BED DRYER USING SUPERHEATED STEAM AS DRYING MEDIUM FOR BEET PULP

Objective

The main objective of the project was to demonstrate the energy effectiveness of a pressurized fluid-bed beet pulp steam dryer, substituting a conventional direct combustion dryer. By using this equipment, it's possible to recover
all the combustion dryer. By using this equipment, it's also possible to recover all the residual heat in drying process from the condensed steam, as well as, from the evaporated water from the beet pulp to be reutilized in different parts of the process.
The obtained global energy saving is 22,3% of the energy used before the project, so, the consumption saving is around 2.624 Ton/year.
The expected payback is 5,9 years.L%
Results have been according with the expected ones.
1. This project is the first industrial application of a pressurized fluid bed dryer using superheated steam as drying medium beet pulp from sugar production. The drying system (not including steam generation system) as a whole, is innovative. Main energy data are : evaporation, 25 t/h at 25 bar g. supply; steam supplied, 32,6 t/h at 25 bar g; steam produced, 30,2 t/h at 2,8 bar g; differential power consumption, nil; expected energy saving; 22,3% over last technology.
2. The main innovative elements of the system are :
- Application of fluid bed as advanced drying system.
- Use of superheated steam as drying medium in substitution of direct combustion.
- Comprehensive low temperature residual heat recovery from both evaporated water and evaporating fluid (as condensed water).
- Specific software development.
- No emission of vapour, dust or odour, because the product is dried in a closed system.
By this devlopments it could be obtained an important know-how for subsequent applications in drying process. 3. This project means a great deal of risk, because any failure in the whole factory. System was designed for fully automated operation, what makes necessary a very complex computerized installation.
Nevertheless, the cost of this technology when its efficiency has been proved, is be not a lot more expensive compared to conventional equipment.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
