DEMONSTRATION OF AN ENERGY-EFFICIENT ONE-STAGE STEAMER ON BEHALF OF THE TEXTILE WET FINISHING INDUSTRY

Objective

The aim of the project is to verify the thermal- and electrical energy-, process water and chemicals saving obtained during an experimental set-up of an one-stage bleaching range (and washing range) based on vacuum extraction technology, on behalf of the textile wet finishing industry. The obtained reduction of energy, water and chemicals has been made possible by :
- introduction innovative techniques which are able to apply 140% liquor on the fabric and specific fabric transport techniques within the process which results in a reduction of necessary (wash/steam) process treatments (one-stage). The developed new innovative technologies must result in the following savings :
- electrical energy 30%
- chemical consumption 30%
- thermical energy 60%
- process water consumption 50%
- steam consumption 60
%

- Innovative technology :
The obtained reduction of energy, water and chemicals has been made possible by developing innovative technics which are able to apply 140% liquor on the fabric and specific fabric transport technics within the process which results in a reduction of necessary process treatments (one stage instead of two-stages)
Innovative parts :
- vacuum extraction system
- steamer
- chemical dosing system
- liquid impregnating system
- efficient heating system
- synchronised drive
- conveyor belt
- effective transport system

Context of operation :
Finishing processes are being executed on various kinds of cloth (manufactured from textile fibres) at Arthur Jonston Holdings Ltd. Textile finishing implicates are applied which are absolutely necessary to give the cloth the required properties. In a wet finishing process a steamer is being used for the treatment of woven fabric. By impregnating the fabric with chemicals and by using steam (so called continued scouring) and bleaching the fabric is being treated in the steamer.

Economic aspects :
Additional overcost compared to conventional equipment 595000 ECU. Monitoring phase is an essential step within the project. Monitoring aspects: regular energy measurements, regular environmental measurements, regular technological parameter measurements. These activities have to be worked out with various types (quality and weight) of fabric.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
