PRODUCTION OF POWER ON-SITE TO MEET THE ELECTRICAL NEEDS OF KILN FOR ENAMELLING PROCESS

Objective

The project aims at electrical energy of 2500 kW on-site in order to supply power to an existing electrical kiln that consumes on the average 1200 kW. The kiln is used in a process for enamel coating of bathroom utilities. The gases leaving the turbine will have a temperature of 500 deg. C and will be used in various processes in the factory. Part of the gas will be diluted to about 110 deg. C to be used in a dryer which currently employs electric power and will be converted to the use of gas. About 50% of the turbine exhaust will be used in a thermal fluid boiler on site which is currently fired with fuel-oil. Furthermore, there will be the use of exhaust heat in a process for galvanising surfaces prior to the enamelling process. Finally the rest of the heat will be used for pre-heating of the products prior to their entry to the electrical kiln.L%

The project involves the use of a gas turbine to produce 2500 kW electric energy on site. The exhaust gases from the turbine will then be utilised in a dryer, in a process for galvanising surfaces, in a thermal fluid boiler and for pre-heating products prior to their entry to the kiln. For enamelling the products of ESMALTAL, which are bathroom utilities, it is necessary to employ a tunnel kiln to provide the right temperatures for the enamelling process. The kiln used and found most satisfactory for the process is an electric one. However, the consumption of the power is high and its cost is considerable. In order to maintain competitivety it is imperative that the share of the energy cost to the overall production cost needs to be reduced significantly as the energy cost is a major factor contributor. The gas turbine will first operate on a mixture of propane and air but will be converted to natural gas firing when this fuel is introduced in Portugal. The scope of the Project involves the following :
- Improvement of the existing electric kiln together with the modifications to introduce part of the of turbine exhaust for the pre-drying section of the kiln.
- The modification of the electric dryer by that working on the turbine exhaust.
- The modifications to be carried out on the existing thermal fluid boiler to allow for the introduction of the turbine exhaust.
- The implementation of the gas turbine and its accessories.
- The connnection of the turbine exhaust to the electric kiln, to the dryer and to thermal fluid boiler.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
