HEATING AND VENTILATION OPTIMIZATION IN INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS BY INDIRECT MEASUREMENT OF AIR RENEWAL RATE

Objective

The aim of the project is to reduce the electric and, in the heating period, thermal energy consumption due to heating and ventilating in industrial buildings in the respect of the hygienic standards for the internal environment.
The system proposed monitorizes machines and plants using the internal electrical distribution network for transmitting data regarding production activity level. It controls the ventilation plants in order to adjust air extractions to the production activity and pollution levels; air pollution of each kind of machine and plant are to be previously specified, measured and recorded. The air renewal rate in the buildings is continuously monitored by means of I.M.A.R method. In this way we can check and correct anomalous plants operation and managing conditions. In the hypothesys of using the system in all Italian FIAT Auto's factories the energy saving would reach the amount of about 2200 TOE per annum and the CO2 emission would be reduced of about 50000 t/year.

The project uses innovative technologies a) to collect operative data from machines, and b) to determine how to heat and to ventilate the buildings depending on data collected.
Data collection uses the same Low Voltage distribution electrical network used to supply monitored machines. This technique, named Power Carried Line, has never been employed in an industrial place. The control law is based on an original method to combine data of machines.
The project context is a production plant, including manufacturer, heating, and ventilating machines; all of them are electrically powered.
Air extraction activity in a specified area has to be adjusted to the pollution generated in the worst case by the estimated working machines. Heating and ventilating machines activity level has to be lowest sufficient in every moment; this is necessary to avoid to waste a) heat through ventilation, and b) the energy needed to ventilation plants. Furthermore anomalous plants operation and managing conditions (for example undue opening of windows and doors) would determine difficulties to reach an uniform internal temperature distribution and, as a consequence, a greater amount of energy is needed to reach thermal comfort everywhere. The IMAR method is used to determine the air renewal rate; the heating plants activity is adjusted consequently.
The energy saving obtainable is obvious: machines activity monitoring allow to adjust in real time the consequent activity of ventilation and heating plants; otherwise them would be forced to work always as in the worst case. Moreover electric energy saving means methane saving and minor emission of CO2 due to electricity production. System monitoring to verify results is obtained measuring factory energy consumption, and comparing it to the corresponding consumption preceding the system activation.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
