ENERGY SAVING BY RETROFITTING A S/P STONE PREHEATER TO A ROTARY LIME KILN

Objectif

The primary aim of the project was to reduce operating cost of a long rotary lime kiln by 25%. This was to be achieved by retrofitting an FLSM S/P Preheater to a shortened kiln without incurring penalties in terms of total lime production or product quality.
Additionally the aim of the project was to reduce overall emissions from the lime kiln to the environment.L%
All project objectives were attained during the first 12 months of operation with the shortened kiln and S/P Preheater. Following an initial period required for commissioning and problem solving :
- fuel saving of 27.3% was achieved
- product quality conformed to specification
- environmental emissions overall were reduced

The precipitation stage of the process at Premier Periclase requires lime with residual CO2 and reactivity heretofore only attainable from a long rotary lime kiln. Since 1980 lime was produced in the long kiln wich met the exacting demands required. The kiln was 130 metres long and this project involved shortening it by 57 metres. FLS Minerals A/S carried out the initial process evaluation. The kiln was found to be suitable for shortening and retrofit of an S/P Preheater.
The S/P Preheater is a machine for efficient transfer of heat from the hot gases produced in the kiln to limestone feed contained in the Preheater. Gas temperature reduces from 1050?C to ideally less than 250?C as it passes through the packed stone bed. The S/P Preheater substitutes for 57 metres of the old long kiln. The production process is more energy efficient due to reduced heat loss from the shortened kiln and the lower exhaust gas temperature emissions.
Throughout the construction and plant installation phase of the project of 10 months duration, the lime kiln remained in operation. This was a precondition which influenced plant layout and design. The kiln was shortened from 130 metres to the required 73 metres and connected to the preheater during a planned 3 week shutdown. Additionally, the existing kiln feed and exhaust gas cleaning systems were connected to the new plant during this period. The Preheater shell had been prefabricated in the largest pieces manageable for lifting and transport purposes. The objective was to minimise the amount of fabrications and assembly work required from the mechanical erection contractors on site. A further consideration was that the Preheater shell was to be lined with an insulating block and castable refractory material. The final consideration in planning and co-ordinating the site activity for the main contractors was that the Preheater pieces had to be available for lifting into position at various stages of the superstructure erection.
