Objective
Among the great characters of European history, the genius of Renaissance Leonardo da Vinci represents without any doubt a unreachable peak. His woks were impressively advanced and extremely visionary, in this way resulting particularly tailored for exploiting the opportunity given by multimedia interactive technology. This hasalready brought some electronic publishers to the creation of titles on Leonardo's work, but the products are not always as qualified as Leonardo should be awarded with. "the Multimedia Codices of Leonardo" aim to exploit the long dated experience of Giunti Publishing Group in the reproduction, duplication and critics of Leonardo da Vinci works, the Codices in particular. The reference point of the production are the Giunti Codices fac-simile limited edition, that has required more than 25 years of efforts and the payment of "astronomic" amounts for the rights of reproduction, but the objective is to widespread the knowledge of Leonardo da Vinci works on both specialised and consumer communities. The "database" of originals manuscripts, drawings and texts will be exploited through a more "consumer-oriented" application, in which never realised Leonardo's machines are shown as really working, his theories on physics and anatomy are related to nowadays science, his works of art are described and analysed in the Renaissance framework, his projects of buildings and cities are virtually realised making use od advanced 3D modelling. "The Codex on the Flight of Birds" will be the first title of a series of multimedia interactive titles -developed and sold separately- to be completed by the beginning of third millennium and that will implement all of the Leonardo's Codices plus one -the "Virtual Codex"- in which a complete index of the arguments is given with a general multimedia database in which all the information of the Codices is stored in one. The titles of the series will be characterised by the same basic structure and interface facilities. "The Multimedia Codices of Leonardo" will mainly exploit the possibility of virtual reproducing the machines he designed (boats, flying machines, hudraulic and pneumatic mechanisms, war machines ...) showing their functionalities and facing them to the relative nowadays technology. the title will in particular exploit Leonardo's scientific approach to the studies and his curious and keen observation of phenomena. That will be in fact fully compatible with an effective didactic but vivid approach to the different subjects, in line with the edutainment philosophy. "The Multimedia Codices of Leonardo" editorial staff will involve the world's highest experts on Leonardo da Vinci works, as happened in the Giunti paper publications productions: content supervisor will be Professor Carlo Pedretti, the most world famous scholar of Leonardo, and editorial director Professor Renato Galluzzi, the Director of the Technics and Science Museum of Florence.
