Objective
COMPASS will create services towards SME's that have the ambition to make or acquire tailor-made multimedia company presentations for the sake of their promotion activities. Commercial umbrella organisations can assist their members, in providing them promotion materials in multimedia format, containing generic content on the economical, financial and commercial environment in which the members operate. This information content can then be put available to commercial enterprises, enabling them to use it for their own promotion activities, and by offering the possibility to participate in the system by adding multimedia data on the company itself. The umbrella organisations will use the multimedia material for the promotion of the region or sector as a whole. The information content will be structured in two layers: Multimedia Content Objects (MCO's) and Multimedia Content Blocks (MCB's), created with tools such as Macromedia's Director. The MCO's are atomic elements of information (texts, graphs, tables, soudtracks, speeches, pictures, videos). They are the building elements that will be used for the MCB's: mini-presentations, presenting a single subject, and built up of a sequence and/or superposition of several MCO's. COMPASS will create such services on the Internet, using new attractive access methods. An interactive Virtual 3D Browser will allow to navigate through a V3D World, giving access to the MCB's: instead of menus or selection lists, the user can find the relevant information by 'walkinf around' in an interactive Virtual 3D World, composed of objects like buildings, streets, plazas etc. The Virtual 3D Browser is a VRML-based plug-in, to be used in conjunction with normal web-Browsers. In addition, 3 special services will be realised: a Virtual 3D World Creator will allow trained users to add MCB's AND Virtual 3D objects to the system, a Guided Tour Creator will enable to create subsets of the Virtual 3D World, and a Downloading Facility for Guided Tours will allow to use the system separated from Internet. The basic services, consisting the information content on the Web using the 3D-browser, will be free of charge for the complete Internet population. Revenues will come from fees for three advanced services: the creation and/or downloading of Guided Tours, site presence for companies willing to add MCB's with multimedia organisations will spend part of their own budgets. As a result, COMPASS becomes profitable in the beginning of the third year after the end of the 2-year project.
