Specifying Architectural Building components across Europe

Objective

SABLE will provide a service linking building component manufacturers with architects and building engineers engaged in the design and construction of Buildings across Europe. The intention is to create a European electronic catalogue of building components with cross references to codes of practice and National or Pan-European Standards applicable to the Construction Industry. The project will define a homogeneous Style Guide by which a multimedia set of data files will describe individual building components. The component dataset or portfolio will contain images of the product, textual descriptions, references to Standards, descriptions of the component in Autodesk's DWG and DWF file format and tables of design and commercial data. The consortium intend to publish a comprehensive range of product portfolios using a hybrid solution based on using a CD ROM to supply the large files containing CAD design data and a WWW site to supply commercial data and data providing product visualisation. In addition to collecting product data, the consortium will use commercially available toolsets to structure the data to enable architects and building service engineers to search the datasets to locate components which meet the desired commercial and technical criteria and be compliant with a range of European Standards and codes of practice. Once the appropriate component is selected, it will be possible to gain electronic access to the actual CAD representations of the components in order that they may be directly incorporated within the working CAD drawing set of the building project. During the demonstration phase, the project will focus on HVAC equipment and elements such as doors, windows and stairways. The Partners will use contacts with Irish and French manufacturers to gain access to representative component data. A prototype publishing environment will be built and used to assess the effectiveness of the service from the point of view of practising architects and building engineers. In parallel, the consortium will refine market research and seek to interest a much wider pool of component manufacturers and Standards bodies in participating in the final Pan-European phase of SABLE. The implementation phase will focus on deploying the infrastructure needed to provide a commercial service throughout the EU. At this stage the consortium would seek to increase participation in SABLE from a commercially representative sample of European component suppliers and Standards bodies. A major marketing exercise will take place targeting architects and building engineers across Europe culminating in launching the service by mid 1998. The benefits of the service are seen to be the support for European building component manufacturers wishing to win wider acceptance within European projects. Architects and building engineers, operating for the most part within SMEs, will be able to tender more easily for work across Europe.
