Another way to use the Internet

Objective

As a researcher in economical sciences, G.A. Strauch must admit that many needs in statistical and cartographical distribution still remain unfulfilled. When a researcher or a company begins a search process to find statistical information, the following problems appear frequently : the data catalogues are complex and not rigorous, processing is difficult because of the lack of information about variables, it is often long and expensive to get the data. The aim of the Daedalus project is to let user choose a nude map (he will not be able to have it directly), some datas (he will not see the numerical information), and some cartographic processings, in order to make a thematical map. Thanks to an on-line assistant, the service will not require any scientific background neither any expensive software.
Every kind of data may be included in the server. More over, the final information is displayed following the rules given by the server and data provider, but also, which is rare, by the final user, in the limit of cartographical rules. And this is possible through interactivity in map building. Each user will see data at his manner, using his mapping choices : there are thousands of possibilities. The service has another unlimited dimension : the user can offer to the world any map he has made, by inserting it on the server. The user will only need to classify the new thematical map by translating it in 3 EEC languages, and inform about the sources he used. (Health, Politics, Economy, Demography, ...) All the technology and geographical information is already available in the four companies of the consortium. The project , that have been thought since 1990, will consist in gathering all maps, datas, software and hardware knowledge, into a single and revolutionnary service of intelligent cartography for all. The main tasks are : - We already know the main supplyers we need for the definition phase : UNICEF, Drug observatory ... The objective is to choose the final list of suppliers, select what data will be included, and build solid and formal relationship with them in order to ensure the quality of data to put on the server. - Partners and selected suppliers already have the data. But they are all in different formats, or different plateforms. We need to gather them in a efficient and unique storage technique. - All the software needed for a web server is already done. But we did not choose yet the provider, because we need to examine the cost of each solution, the security provided and the paiement means for final users. Then final Web tests must be done - The two softwares Cartes & Données and Step One must interact to provide a powerful geographical solution.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
