Objective
An intracontinental array with stations along a great circle from Wales to the Caucasus will be installed: the Intracontinental Seismological Profile (ISP). The stations will be located in Hartland (United Kingdom), Membach (Belgium), Moxa (Germany), Brno (Czechoslovakia), Uzhgorod (Ukraine), Simferopol (Crimea), Tbilisi (Georgia) and Ashkhabad (Turkmenistan).
The ISP is designed for studies of the lithosphere mainly in the transition zone between western and eastern Europe, and for local studies of seismicity near the stations (Carpathians, Crimea, Caucasus, Ardennes-Brabant Massif, Rhine Graben, Alps). Up to now, there is a great lack of performant seismological stations in the NIS. A better comprehension of the structure of the lithosphere in this region will enable the tectonically strategic areas deserving closer attention because of the seismic risk to be pinpointed. The destructive earthquakes in Armenia (7 December, 1988) and Georgia (29 April, 1991) have also stressed the need for better instrumentation in the NIS. An important aspect of this profile is the use of newly developed seismological stations equipped with a three-component broadband seismic sensor designed by IIEP and a PC-based data acquisition system constructed by ROB. The seismic stations will be built for subsequent installation in the NIS.
The data collected by this network will be processed, analysed and interpreted by ROB and IIEP and made available for the entire European seismological community.
