Palaeolimnology and lakes with respect to pollution and climate change

Objective

In the last 20 years there has been a rapid expansion in the ability to date, analyse and interpret very recent sediment records from lake, estuarine, coastal and mire sequences. Lake sediments, in particular, have an extremely high chemical and biological information content; they invariably accumulate rapidly (usually over 1 mm per year) and can be dated quite accurately back to about 1800 AD.

In this two phase collaborative research programme the first phase is concerned with developing and standardising palaeolimnological techniques between the University College London and Moscow laboratories, and the second with the initial application of the methods to different environmental problems within Russia.

The techniques to be developed include sediment core design, field sampling, laboratory methods of sediment analysis, high resolution diatom analysis, carbonaceous particle analysis, database structure and numerical methods.

These palaeolimnological techniques will be applied to two related environmental issues, namely, trace metal pollution and acidification of lakes in the Kola Peninsula; and atmospheric contamination of remote mountain regions in the Kola Peninsula.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
