Cooperation on detection technology and computer science for sub-atomic physics

Objective



The research is based on the extensive knowledge of several laboratories in the NIS in the technology of particle and radiation detection and in the formal aspects of computer science. The objective of the collaboration is to provide support to these groups to maintain and develop their expertise in these domains. The expected scientific outputs are: software for symbolic algebra in nuclear and particle physics; software for data analysis; and construction of detector prototypes based on several technologies including plastic scintillators, semi-conductor detectors and high purity crystals.

Both theorists and experimentalists from IN2P3 will take part in the research. The theorists will participate in the design and the choice of strategies to tackle the 1-loop computation. The experimentalists will play a major role as an interface between theory and experiment, in the development of an event generator using the output of the Russian package, in the event simulation in real detectors, and in the design of expert systems for numerical and symbolic integration.

IN2P3 is engaged in the NOMAD experiment at CERN studing neutrino oscillations and neutrino scattering physics, and is constructing the Transition Radiation Detector for NOMAD, made of nine planes of proportional tubes filled with xenon-methane. For the radiation detector the IN2P3 will put emphasis on intrinsic-parity breaking modes in actinide nuclei, on beta-v angular correlations in superallowed beta-decay, on neutrinoless double beta emission using the 16 multidetector Ge HP telescope, to investigate high-order effects in conversion electron spectra with the high-resolution electrostatic spectrometer.

Development studies in the domain of radiation will include development of specific semi-conductor multi-detector systems for nuclear structure studies (Ge, Si, BaF2 detectors for experiments), development of low-energy electron spectroscopy and production of gas targets and hyperthin radioactive sources as well as experimental studies), and the construction of a low background telescope spectrometer (Ge HP multidetector) for investigations of neutrino properties in nuclear beta-decay.
